Painting Over Wallpaper – Is It Ever a Good Idea? A Lincoln Painter’s View

Painting over wallpaper is one of those things that can work — but only in very specific situations. As a Lincoln painter and decorator, I usually advise caution.

If wallpaper is:

  • Fully bonded
  • Free from bubbles
  • Not textured
  • Properly sealed

…then painting over it might be acceptable. But that’s a big “if”.

In many Lincoln painting and decorating jobs, wallpaper starts lifting once moisture from the paint gets into the paper or adhesive. When that happens, the finish quickly fails.

Textured wallpapers are particularly risky. Paint highlights every raised pattern and seam, and any movement underneath becomes obvious.

Most experienced Lincoln painters will recommend removing wallpaper properly before painting. It takes longer upfront, but it gives a far better and longer-lasting result.

If you’re unsure, a professional painter and decorators Lincoln homeowners rely on can assess it before you commit.
